After class was over, I stayed after to chat with Professor Hickman. It would be my last time to see him in his life, as he passed away a few years ago. Thus, this will remain my strongest memory of him. I told him that I felt the piece was unfinished, as I hadn’t done as much as I’d wanted to do before the deadline. “The piece is finished when you say it’s finished. Now if you want to keep working on it, by all means do so. But for the viewer – for me – until you tell me it’s not done I don’t know it, and it looks superb to me the way it is now.”
I had not in all the years since painted something in watercolor with the same level of realism (though there are plenty of realistic drawings and the like), until this week when I finished Water Garden. In my mind, it is along the same vein as my piece from all that time ago. I would go so far as to pair them as part of the same series despite some slight changes to my use of the medium.
